…and to buy daffodils!
In 2013, 19 teams of volunteers and numerous sponsors supported Greene County’s Relay for Life, raising close to $50,000 for the American Cancer Society. So far this year eight teams have already signed up and have a head start on the fundraising. Registration is open through April 26, so there is still plenty of time to gather friends, relatives, and coworkers to raise funds for a cause that touches many in our community.
Creativity is part of the spirit of the event as teams come up with unique names and money raising ideas. For instance, a new team this year is St. Joe’s Holy Walkamolies, and another team with a playful name, WOW (Women Out Walking), is back again. For fundraising, the Gardens Assisted Living team lead the way last November with a “Chili Cook-Off.” That team is now taking advantage of the season by offering the local delivery of stuffed bears and sweet treats for Valentine’s Day.
Three other teams are continuing the tradition of selling Relay for Life daffodils. The Greene County Medical Center (WOW), the National Honor Society Stompers, and the Cancer Crusaders are taking advance orders for the spring blooms through Feb. 24.

Persons who aren’t contacted by a team member can order daffodils at Fudge’s Flower Shop, Homestead Bakery, Total Images by Cindy or The Hairem in Jefferson, Peoples Trust & Savings Bank in Grand Junction, or the Churdan Public Library, or call Amy Becker at 515-386-0111, Nelson at 386-3563, or Ruth Broman at 386-2188.
Registration for teams and individuals is on-line this year at http://www.relayfor life.org/greenecountyia or by using the link posted at GreeneCountyNewsOnline. According to those who have signed up, it’s a breeze.
In fact, librarians in each of the county libraries are trained and ready to assist anyone with the process. Registration committee members Jane Nelson, Kathy Morain, and Annie Ostendorf are also available to answer questions. Registration can be done from any computer and at any time before the April 26th event.
Everyone who signs up will get a specially designed T-shirt provided by American Athletic, Inc/Spalding – whose parent company is Fruit of the Loom. To ensure the correct T-shirt size, people need to register by March 7.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Greene County will be held Saturday, April 26, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at the Greene County Community Center.
